On Saturday 16th May Donna and John ran their annual Singing For Fun day at Edstaston Village Hall.  This is the third year they have organised this and members from Whitchurch and Wem choirs joined up to sing a range of gospel and spiritual songs.

There were some tricky four part harmonies but the music was great and Holly sang some beautiful solo parts as well as supporting the sopranos with the other pieces.   It was a great day and Donna and John are already thinking about next year, possibly with a jazz theme.  Although the day was well attended, perhaps even more choir members could come along next year, it is a  very enjoyable day and it was sunny enough to eat our sandwiches outside at lunch time!

Donna was back at rehearsal on Monday after recovering from feeling unwell last Monday and Amy was back on the piano and we continued perfecting our repertoire, and did a couple of new songs which we sang in rounds which sounded good.

Several people sponsored Donna for her bike ride and she is happy for us to donate directly to her if people are finding it hard to donate on line with a not very easy link.  She is still cycling everywhere like mad in preparation for her bike ride in June for ME.

Don’t forget, no rehearsal on Bank Holiday Monday so hope to see everyone back at rehearsal on Monday 1st June.

Monday 5th january 2015

MONDAY 5th January 2015, the choir’s first rehearsal of the new year. The second £25 installment of the annual subscription is due today.

gabriel faureWe will start learning Faure’s Requiem. Here is a YouTube link  – just one of many recordings of this beautiful piece.

If you would like to practice at home Donna suggested and the Requiem link is here

We will be performing it with Wem Community Choir in April, provisionally the Sunday after Easter at St Peter and St Pauls, Wem, but firm details will follow.

The choir will be performinig at a wedding on May 16th and our repertoire has yet to be decided. This is the same day as the annual ‘Singing For Fun Day’ when the theme will be gospel music.

Photographs of some choir members performing carols at Sainsbury’s can be seen in following posts that have been transferred from the original blog on Googles’ Blogspot. The choir raised nearly £60 in just two hours for The Beechtree Community Centre.

The choir will be having its annual social/meal on Tuesday 20th January and details will have been emailed to you by Margaret who is taking bookings. She and Pat have found a new venue with a set menu to order from.

Rehearsal 24th November…

We rehearsed a fair number of Christmas carols tonight, a selection of standards, favourites, popular, traditional, modern and familars sums it up! Newer members of the choir have some catching up to do and YouTube would be a good source for this.

Here’s the list of concerts and performances-

SATURDAY 6th December – Marbury Senior Citizens Christmas Party, Marbury Village Hall 7.30pm to entertain
SUNDAY 14th December – Sainsbury’s supermarket 2 – 4pm
TUESDAY 16th December – Senior Citizens’ Club in the afternoon
FRIDAY 19th December – Hospital Crib Service in the afternoon
SATURDAY 20th December – Town Centre in the morning and in the afternoon from 2.30pm Prospect House in Malpas
MONDAY 22nd December – Greenfields at 2.30 and Fairfields at 3.30

Several choir members stayed behind for an extra rehearsal to prepare for the Marbury Christmas Party performance on Saturday 6th December, the first in the Christmas programme for this year. Ray and Margaret will be compiling and circulating the running order of carols for the various venues. Not all the carols will be sung at each.

In the absence of any up to date photographs of the choir performing these were taken during rehearsal and will be used for publicising the choir in the local press during the next couple of weeks.

Two of these photographs and an up to date article have been submitted to The Whitchurch Herald and The North Shropshire Chronicle/Shropshire Star for publication. The running list of Christmas carols and songs has been emailed to choir members by Margaret; choir members performing at Marbury Village Hall on 6th December will need to stay behind rehearsal next Monday for a further run through.
