The choir formed in September 2010, following help from Janet Cross of the Beechtree Centre who undertook an extensive search for a Musical Director. Donna Teague was approached and took on the challenge of forming a new choir. The first meeting/rehearsal was held at Pauls Moss (the old council offices) in the residents’ lounge. Sixteen nervous people were there on the first night. Initially the intention was to meet for one term and see if the venture was successful. Donna soon had us singing and each week more people turned up to join, hearing about us by word of mouth. We presented a short programme of songs to family and friends in December 2010 – our first performance.
In January 2011 after a short meeting we decided to keep going. A small committee was formed and we agreed a constitution.
The objects of the Whitchurch Community Choir are:
“to promote choral singing for health, fun and enjoyment by bringing together people of all ages and abilities to sing in a choir; also to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including rehearsing and developing a repertoire with a view to making public presentations through concerts and recitals. To further such charitable purpose or purposes as the trustees in their absolute discretion shall think fit but in particular through the making of grants and donations”.
The choir is self-funding, the annual subscription is £120 per year payable in 4 instalments of £30. This pays for the hire of the rehearsal, purchasing music and paying our Musical Director. For new members there is a ‘come and try it’ freebie for the first week. People who decide to stay will be asked to pay for the remainder of the term. During rehearsals there is a short break when tea and coffee is available for a small contribution (20p). This is the opportunity to make new friends.
The members of the committee (the trustees) are:
Morag Cliff – Chairman
Ray Hatton – Treasurer
Margaret Hatton – Secretary
Irene Daldry – Librarian
Donna Teague has been the Musical Director since the start, and has worked hard to develop the choir.
We have continued to perform in public; we have organized concerts – in April 2011 “Songs through the Decades”, in April 2012 a Disney Concert and November 2014 a medley of songs by Rogers and Hammerstein, performed in St Alkmund’s Church for The Friends of St Alkmund’s Church.
We have also accepted invitations to sing and perform at various events; the Rotary Concert, (two years running), Christmas carols at the local nursing homes and the Whitchurch Community Hospital, Jubilee events, Christmas fair and at St Alkmund’s church 300 year celebrations. In March 2014 we performed a well-attended concert at St John’s Church in conjunction with Wem choir plus soloists, called “The Reawakening of Spring” and proceeds were in aid of the ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Society charity.
Our repertoire continues to grow. There are no auditions. We remain a community choir which anyone is welcome to join. We rehearse on Monday evenings from 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm at the Bargates Hall (behind St Alkmund’s), during school term. We break for school holidays. In 2012 we invested in scarves and ties for the choir members to wear, giving the choir a recognizable identity. New members will be given a folder for music and a scarf or tie, before your first public performance. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee members.
